Minister Visits the “U”!

On Monday, August 19th, Ms. Josefine Paul, Minister for Children, Youth, Family, Equality, Refugees, and Integration of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, visited the Dortmund-based association VKII Ruhrbezirk e.V. to learn about the association’s activities and, in particular, the “Ankoppeln” project, which started in Dortmund in January.

The “Ankoppeln” project was initiated in collaboration with the Ministry for Children, Youth, Family, Equality, Refugees, and Integration (MKJFGFI NRW) and the City of Dortmund (Youth Welfare Office Dortmund). The leading organization of the project is the Association of Cameroonian Engineers and IT Specialists Ruhrbezirk (VKII e.V.). The model project is also supported by the Youth Welfare Office’s child and youth promotion and is implemented in cooperation with Women Empowerment e.V., Somali-German Association Dortmund e.V., Afrika 2030 e.V., and the Association for the Development of African Culture (VEAK) e.V.

The project is particularly aimed at young people with an African migration background living in Dortmund. Participants are introduced to important social issues throughout the project to strengthen their integration opportunities.

A key focus of the “Ankoppeln” project is democracy education. Children, young people, and their parents are invited to engage with democracy and their roles within it through various offerings in the first year. People with migration backgrounds have been portrayed as a problem for Germany for years, and election campaigns have been conducted at their expense. This has led to a divide and a shift to the right in society. Black people, in particular, are affected by racism, more so in Germany than in other EU countries, as evidenced by the representative study “Being Black in the EU” from 2023, and many withdraw into their communities. But democracy needs all of us; otherwise, it is in great danger.

During the Minister’s visit, the project’s milestones to date were presented. The visit also facilitated direct dialogue with numerous young participants of the “Ankoppeln” project.

Pressemitteilung

Dortmund, 20.08.2024

Ministerin kam ins „U“!
